cloudy water question, what happened???

ooo just the thread I was looking for.

I also have this problem (still do). I have a DIY wet/dry with scrubbies and stuff. It was running really clear for a few weeks even with very very heavy feeding (cucumbers and zucchini for plecos that cloud the water like crazy). One day it just clouded really badly and it's still cloudy. I washed the medium with old tank water. A lot of dirt came out.

So there was nothing special that you did to fix the cloudiness? just water changes? (sorry for hijacking your thread... i thought it would be inappropriate to open a thread with such a similar issue)

Well first thing do a ph, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, test so we know what were working with... Ok first clean your wet/dry and change the medium if possible, fix any PH, Nitrite, Nitrate, or Ammonia spikes or crashes. also what % WC's are you doing? I might try a 40%, if still cloudy after 24 hours try another 40% WC...

yeah i checked my filters and they were fine. there wasnt enough build up to make the water cloudy, so i believe i had a nitrite spike cause the cichlas appetite slowed down. they are still not eating like they usually do but they are eating. im doing 20% wcs everyday to slowly get the nitrites under control.
