CLOUDY WATER

not saying either is wrong, and your sponge filter will offer some living space for bacteria, but you can add so much more filtration with a type of bio-media in the tank, carbon is not bad media at all but is more often needed for removing certian chemicals from the water and it does remove some waste but a good biological filter will do more good to your fish. as said before you can still run carbon if you like and many do, but there is no reason at all to have a whole canister full.

not familiar how media goes into that particular canister but if you have 3 levels of media i would personally use a type of filter floss or filter pad in the first chamber and fill the rest with your choice of a ceramic type bio media, i use sera biofiber in the first chamber and sera siporax in the rest, i rinse mine in tank water about once a month and thats it, i also have very messy sa/ca cichlids so maybe more time before cleaning for you. I've also use fluval biomax in one of my canisters and it seems to work fine also.
