clown knives in 180g tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its possible, but not advised in my eyes. when mine was 18" in my 180 it looked pretty obvious he wanted more room, these are just massive fish that swim really fast at times and deserve more. the only reason why ck's rarely get over 18" in captivity is because their not taken care of properly, me included. my last one died from eating a rotten shrimp that i failed to remove from the tank.

hmmmm ok. know any other knifefish that only get up to a foot maybe that i can keep in multiples?

only other knife that I can think of that get over a foot and aren't common or super aggressive is the "gold line" knife fish... S. macrurus. but idk if you can keep multiple of those as we don't in our lab.

BUT, we do mix those with other south american knife fish. In one tank we actually have glass knives (Eigenmania spp), black ghost OR brown ghost (don't mix those two usually), and a gold line.

oh yeah, also there are R. rostratus... we keep thsoe together alone with gold lines and we have a few pushing 18 inches at least.

ok thank you. the black ghost knifefish is more common in my area, and i figured out a way to get one in three of my tanks so thank you. and my other tank will have some african brown knifefish in it as well. i just love them.

so i figured that my setups will have two black ghost knifefish, and about 8 african brown's so ill have a good setup of knifefish to look at :P. in separate tanks of course. but im happy i finally got my setups figured out.

A 180g is the average tank that most people will say a CK can be housed in for life. CKs can reach over 3' in the wild or in a really large set up. Most CK in captivity will usually top out from 18" to 20" With those measurements, a 180g will be fine. As for keeping a group of CKs together...I have not tried it myself, but there are many people who have had success with this. I've heard that they are best kept as a single specimen in a tank alone or mixed with other large fish.

I definitely wouldn't

someone on here has 2 that are 40 inches I do believe. of course they are in a huge pound, but they should reach over 24 easy.

plus I don't think they usually get along with each other but I coudl be wrong about that

wow, 40"? I would love to see a pic of those 2 giant knife :nilly:
