so i have 4 cl's in my semi planted 55gln tank which is my community tank more or less. they are all about 4-4.5" & have been a fat and happy group for over a year since ive had them. at first they were out and always active regaurdless of time o day or light ect. and now it seems the only come out at night. ive tried bribes of shrimp and other pieces of their fav foods and if they do come out its still only long enough to grab the food and hide again. have my guys become fully nocturnal, or is there a reason im missing for this behavior? the only fish in the tank that are of size is my 1 bristle nose male @5.5" & a few smaller baby bn plecos around 2-3"... please help

Your CL's should be active all the time.....so what's going on is unusual. Have you checked your water parameters lately?

I had my CL's in a tank that had a plastic root in it.. they ALL (50+) hid in it during the day.

I moved them to another tank with tin foil barbs, and now they are out all the time.

I've learned with Clown Loaches, if you give them good hiding places they will hide and stay there like forever it seems. Now I only give them spaces to rest rather than hide. The other fish wake them up when its' time to play.

i constantly.check my water perims. religously, i have, and.use a master test kit, as well as routine water changes weekly, 2 @ 20-30% roughly.

they have alot of hiding places, and a few REALLY great one they can disapear in.. its a sand bed with a few plants and a rock ledge pile in the center with driftwood and two caves one on eother side. the caves are where they hide, and they just seem to stay all day or untill the lights are off. so should i just remove the caves and see how it goes?

yes, i have thought of adding more CL's to make a bigger school i just dont see it as a first option due to the tank only being 55gals and it being a lttle mote them moderstly landscaped. if it was more roomy i wouldnt worry as much on space. i just dont wish to over crowd or cram the lil guys in a shoebox persay.. thanks for the feed back please keep it coming..

No, you just need to add dithers to make them feel comfortable. Also, a 55 is really not big enough for CLs long term.

He only has them in the 55g as a grow out, he also has a 125g and is searching for something 240+. So tank size will never be an issue :)
