Clown loach sick for 3 weeks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with Bluehairman, swim bladder and you seem to be doing the right stuff. I wish you luck on his recovery.

Thanks! Its doing good able to lay on the bottom on its belly for a while now before it lays over, swimming around - quite active. But still seems unable to control where its going. But I'll take any improvement. I'm assumming its swim bladder, so should I treat the 55 gal. that I removed it from or is it not something that is contagious. Also, I have a Newt in the 55 gal. can it stay in the tank when I treat the tank? Just trying to make sure all my guys are good!

Well it does sound like he is getting better, not sure it it is worth continuing meds or not. Clowns will slepp on their side normally so I wouldn't worry about that. I've never heard of people keeping newts with fish so thats an interesting concern.

It shouldn't be contagious.
Another thing you could try is feeding it peas along with normal food and see if that helps.

What does you fish's diet consist of?

Yeah I bought a sack of frozen peas, peel em, cut up and put in the tank to see if he will eat, so far not enough control to be able to get ahold of it. But we're still putting them in just in case he's eating at night. I clean out uneaten in the a.m.

I really appreciate everyones support, wish I had found MFK several months ago. Im setting up a 100 gal tank for Cichlids but going to take it slow.

Update on Loach: Got him a couple of buddies so he's not alone in the tank, they are all getting along. Didn't want to pull the loaches I had out of the 55 and get them all stressed so I just bought two more. He's eating a little better on his own, still has issues with controlling his movements. One of the things I noticed is his body seem to have a curve to it now that it didn't before, so he only swims counter clockwise in a circle. Do you think this will go away or is this perm? We're past a month now and he's still alive, do I need to keep him in the quar. tank or put him back in the 55? I have a 30 gal now available for him instead of the 10 he is in if that would be better. Occupant of 30 have been moved to 100 gal. Still lotsa questions, but I know there's an answer somewhere.

Sounds like a spinal deformity that is probably permanent.
I don't know what diseases can cause spinal deformities except fish TB and you better hope he doesn't have that.

that doesn't sound good, TB as in the human type or .....? And what do I do about TB? Or how do I test this out, I still have the tetracycline but I'm extremely allergic to it so I have to be very careful about handling it.

Well, I don't think your fish has fish tb. It's not human tb but has the name because it's in the same genus as tuberculosis, mycobacterium.

I don't think it's fish tb though because you fish has been alive for a while, so don't worry.
There's no known cure for fish tb but some antibiotics have worked for some people.
