Clown loaches in a 55 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A 55 will easily last you a few years maybe more if you have good filtration.

Filtration has nothing to do with it. CL's are very social and active fish. They like to sprint from one side of the tank to another. The more room the better. If you get a good deal on them, buy them and you could move them to a 125 in a year, year and a half.

agreed.....they prefer to be in groups and are very active

Thanks again everyone.
I will check for prices and go from
there. 125 is probably the maximum for me, even though I love all the big beauties on here, so it'll be perfect:)
6 will be good, right? I know more the merrier, but I do want those cory cats aswell.
Also, what would be a good staple diet?

Buy 6 or 7 enjoy them for a couple years and sell them for a profit or trade back to the LFS for some new smaller ones. Large clown loaches are very easy to rehome. As far as quarenting them, I usually just treat for general parasites. You should QT them to protect the other fish in the tank but what other fish do you have in the 55g?

That's what I thought too, rehome them if I don't get the larger tank by then and make a profit.
Its not set up yet, its used and Ive been meaning to fill it up and check for leaks first. But it will have some rummynose tetras, african butterfly fish, and cory cats are the only definite fish as of right now. It will be planted with sand too so that should keep them busy.

Make sure you do your homework as far as treatment for parasites, water temperature, parameters and food. Some can be very sensitive to changes in their environment.

Also they like to play dead sometimes too... I have one that will lay on his side every time I do a water change.

Food wise anything shrimp. I feed mine cut up raw shrimp from the freezer section and they go nuts. The rest of their diet is cichlid pellet clean up from my Oscars.

A 55 gal should be okay for a couple years. You will probably be lucky if you get your 1'' clowns to hit 4-5'' in 2 years. Provided you have good filtration they should be fine, but I would keep them in there any longer than that.

Maybe you should just get 4 of them instead of 6.

Of course. Reading everything I can on any fish I want to buy is what I do best.
The playing the dead thing was one of the things that made me want some lol.
Why do you suggest 4? Cause of size?

With CLs the bigger the group the better they are. A larger group may cause you to have to rehome sooner, but I would not go with less then 7.
