clown loaches?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have one thats 15 years old...one foot long. There is one in a public aquarium in Europe that is 42 years old. Love this fish!

I love my clowns. I have 5 ranging from 3 inches to about 6. They are with my 9" Red tail and my 11" Oscars (I have 2). They are an active fish. They will play dead on occasion. They also do not care about any other thing in my tank. Often found laying on top of my RTC.

i'll definitely keep that in mind, im still contemplating it - my biggest concern is that my peacock eel and rainbow shark not being able to get food because the loaches are so much more active

I have no experience with eels, but my Rainbow has no problem competing for food. It scavenges all day pretty much. (when it isn't harassing my Balas) Also my Rainbow swims with the CLs and mimics them. I think he thinks he is a cl.

Nice pics. What is your stock in that tank?

Aside from the loaches, we have two discus, a red severum, two senegals, a lone krebensis, two synos, a one eyed blood parrot, a dwarf giraffe cat, 2 banjo cats, a striped ralph, 2 rubber lips plecs, a albino chocolate plec, a black ghost knife, a brown knife and a flag tail. Eventually the loaches will move to the 150 which I'm planning on making into a river themed tank.

I wouldn't stock clowns in a 75 unless you plan on moving them to a 6 foot tank down the line. They are social, need to be kept in groups. They are sensitive because they are scaleless and are prone to external parasites, internal parasites, even bacterial infections. They take a long time to get used to a tank and be active, I wouldn't worry at all about them out competing other fish for food in the beginning. Don't house them with aggressive species, they can defend themselves but they tend to "clown" around and can annoy other fish, and when they do that to an aggressive fish it can end badly.
I keep my 6 big clowns in a 125 that is designed around their needs... lots of flow in the tank, with clean, overfiltered water low in nitrates (read: lots of water changes), and lots of hiding places.
They are a wonderful fish with lots of personality, and of course great looking. They are slow growing, and remember these fish comes from Borneo waters, so they prefer soft and slightly acidic water... whoever recommended keeping them with African cichlids is dead wrong. They prefer a sand substrate.

Hey I just purchased 1 CL and I am amazed by his personality. It is about 2inches and schools with my geos! I didn't know they need to be in a group. I have a 5x2x2 tank and would a group of 2 or 3 CL be good with 6 red head geos? Does anyone have just 1 CL and live happily?

One by itself is a bad idea bud
