Cobra feeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Your female its an absolute stunner. I must confess that the feeding of mice, particulary live ones, kind of buggs me and its what holds me from having a snake, specially in a place like where I live because frozen mice availability is sporadic and unreliable. That means I would have to keep, breed and process my own feeders. But I gess I would get used to it.

You are crazy bro.... i don't know too much about cobras and there are probably many species but from what i understand don't they get fairly big?? Like 7 feet long? lol i see the pin on the slider but i would have a pad lock on that thing!! lol... awesome video and very cool looking animal thanks for posting!!

3 questions:
1) do you keep anti-venom?(i hope you would..)
2) how long does it stay good for?
3) expensive?

not to thread jack, if i am...(it just popped in my head) but did you see that tv show a while back with the guy who slept with all the venomous snakes in the world.... if not you should check it out.. i think you snake lovers would enjoy it, definitely interesting they locked him up in a booth( in new york city i think) it was on public display(i was waiting for him to get bit!!)

**found it... called venom in vegas it was on animal planet... if you haven't seen it, i think you might enjoy!!**

Most venomous keepers I know do not keep antivenin handy, I would venture to say this includes Snakeguy....
I THINK that most antivenin only has a shelf life of 6 months or so (refrigerated) and it just isn't worth it to continuously restock the expensive stuff when you don't get bit very often (hopefully don't get bit at all if you are following proper proceedure... but **** eventually happens.... in which case it's good to know your doctors at the closest hospital....
Luckily we live in Fl... Venom 1 For the win! Most hospitals around here have a decent supply of antivenin and if they do not have the one needed than Venom 1 is a short helicopter ride away and they do an amazing job keeping everyone alive.

Also... on your price question...no idea what it would be to buy it to keep stocked some where but i know snake bite bills from the hospital are generally VERY expensive.... Crofab (general crotalid antivenin) alone is around $800 per vial.... and most people need multiple vials....

yes, cobras can grow to be about 7' and I have plans for them once they get to that size. And as for the pad lock on their cages, the hole in the glass is not large enough for normal padlocks and the cages are shaped oddly which prevents a padlock from fitting to them. I do have locks on them though, they just have a flexible wire instead of heavy steal. Sylvias answered most of your questions on AV but I went ahead and copied and pasted a previous post of mine that should cover everything:

"1) I would need a medical prescription for each type of antivenin I get
2) Most hospitals will not administer a medicine that you give them (because if soething is wrong with it I could sue them)
3) it costs up to $6000 per vial and I would need anywhere from 5 to (in rare cases) 50 vials of it
4) it expires in a mater of months so I would have to replace it once or twice a year which means that at the price it goes for, I would be paying up to $360,000 per year per type of AV that I need and I need 4 different types of antivenin for the species that I keep. (assuming I bought 30 vials which is not uncommon to be used for a single bite)

Unfortunately, I am not made of money but I do have Miami Venom1 on speed dial and I have checked with them to make sure they carry the type of AV that I need. I have also talked with a local hospital and discussed which doctor would be treating me (one with snakebite experience) and I have given them my bite protocols and also made sure that they know where to get the AV from. Hopefully, all that will be for nothing and I will not get bit but if I do, I am ready.

as far as insurance goes, I asked if they covered snake bites, they said yes. I left it at that. What they don't know won't hurt them. ;) "

I have not seen the "venom in vegas" because I do not have a TV but I do know a lot of people involved in it. I was told a few tricks they used to keep it safe such as heating certain spots on the floor to keep the snakes over these basking areas and many of the snakes were recently milked making a bite less potent if a bite did occur. Also the species used were not particularly active snakes and if I recall correctly there were some non venomous snakes in there as well to give it an added sense of danger with more snakes.

the hospital generally determines the price and I have seen it sell for $5-6k.

holy crap!! that's expensive... and yea if you are bit(hope that never happens), it happened in the yard!! LOL...
