Is it alright to put a coconut in a fishtank??? What if I broke it, drained it, and ripped the fleshy part out? and I still have only half the shell to put in with a small opening for fish?? Will this mess up my fishtank??

If it were me i would go through the the drift wood prep and then place it in your tank:)

Boil it. Place it in a container of also hot hot water and add aquarium salt. Tie somethin to it to keep it down. As this will help water log it faster. Once the tannins are all gone after watching the water turn green or brown til it doesn't any more (water stays clear).. You can place it in the tank.. This could take weeks.. But water change every day with hot water and aquarium salt.. Hot water expands the wood hence makin making it easier for the water to seep into it and tanins to seep out.. Also kills off bacteria.. Thats the simple version there is a couple step by steps in the DIY section if this is not enough to follow pm me and i will give you a step by step that i found:)

I've been using raw coconut shells and husk for years with no boiling before putting them in my tanks. I use a 2" to 3" hole saw to make caves out of them, pull all the milk and flesh out, put in a large stone to weigh them down, and drop them in the tanks. My BN and medusa plecs chew everything up on the coconut. They seem to really enjoy the bit of "hair-like" husk I leave on top since that's always the 1st to disappear. The cats will even breed inside the shells. Although, I've never seen them lay eggs on the shell. They lay their eggs on the agate stones I use to weigh the shells down.

good info oddball. i was being doubtful about the cocos a while there. will also give it a try
