In the wholesale tanks at work, E cats tend to clump together in groups and hide in the cave in the tank. However, I feel if there was any distinguishable territory this would not work out so well.

He's about 2". Currently quarantining in a 10 gallon, will grow out in a 60 gallon and then pond/container after that.

I couldn't say no to his little fat face. I tried, but once I looked away from the tank I felt like I couldn't go to the grave in peace without having him.

Propagated as a food? Must be prolific spawners, then. I'll try to find out if the supplier got them from a farm or the wild. Here are a few sloppy shots, but they have visible fin ray counts in them! This little guy is on the move and doesn't want to sit still at all so all shots are moving shots in low lighting. AKA, they could be worse. That's sand and bubbles, not ich. He was clean as a whistle when he went in.

Can they actually hit 30"? What's the biggest any of you have seen?

According to a study in the book "Fishes of Lake Kariba" which is an artificial lake in Africa, most M. electricus only reach 1-2' in size. Specimens over two feet are rare.

The biggest I have personally seen was 10".

The one that I currently have is about 15". How ever I lost my largest one in 96. She was 22" of lazy beast. I see people claiming they will only grow to about 12" in captivity, but its definitely not true for every fish. If given a proper diet and good water conditions these guys will reach their full potential.

My friend convinced me to grab one in the tank at the LFS. The zap was pretty mild but made my finger contract. Really neat. I know it's stressful, so it's not like I'll be doing that to my fish on a regular basis. But the experience is still worth...experiencing.

Now, what type of diode do I use for a fish-powered light?
