I have read articles that an arapaima grows rapidly from 13 inches onwards and reaches 26 inches in a year , after that the growth inhibites and may take 3 to 4 years in raching 40 inches. In view of that i thought the 12 x 5 x5 would suffice for atleast 10 years. Today he is only 8 inches in length

I think it can get to 40" in 2 years and it would suffice for maybe 3

Maybe you can keep him in the 30 long enough to stunt him real good, I hear such dwarfed pimas dont get nearly as huge as healthy ones. If you cut back on the water changes you could keep him under 20 inches indefinitely!

haha, I love you're sarcasm.
In all honesty, that arapaima will probably out grow anything you have waiting for it.

when he gets to around 15 inches i plan to put him alongside my 22 inch silver.

first it was 12 now 15? the tank is 8 wide how do you expect him to turn around? your ganna wait itll hes half the length of the tank to move him? just put him in right now the silver wont hurt him and get the big tank now instead of down the road

For a Paima as bare minimum recommend 20ftx8ftx6ft LxWxH and that's for at most two years....I'd recommend starting it within the next month as they get HUGE....My Favorite Osteoliguid(sp) is a "Mini" Arapaima aka African Arowana

Stop caring about what those guys are saying over tank size,of course the bigger the better for a paiche ,but as long as you can get something round or square in the 7 feet range with at least a 5 feet depth, your fish will be ok till its final day I own a fabulous specimen ,,,,,,,,,, keep it clean

7x7x5 is not nearly big enough for a Paima I'd like to see this Paima of yours PM as so we dont junk/hijack this kids thread.....
Paima are active fish at an Average of 6ft to over 7ft and say on the small side of 5ft you'd still need a bigger pond
