cohabitants with pirarucu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi Gokul,

(I am from Bombay).

That is an awesome fish! How much did you get it for? (Did you get it in Chennai or had it shipped from somewhere else?)

In my personal opinion, that loud/noisy background with pictures of plant etc. looks good when your tank has unattractive fish.

I hope your 240 Gal. has a solid background (dark blue or black) which will show-case the fish well.

Don't worry about getting a tank larger than the 12-footer. If he gets larger than that just cook it and eat it. Most people in the world consider a pima a food fish and it is said to be delicious!

(It will be about 6-7 years at the very least when he will be about 70 Kgs of meat, so I presume you can invite me as well :)

Good luck,
Sid

About the original question about tank-mates:

Are you looking for suggestion for tank-mates in this current tank? or in the 240Gal. with the Silver?

(Don't put any other fish in the 30 gal.)

In the 240Gal. with the Silver, what are the other tank-mates?

Depending on the compatibility of the other inhabitants of the 240Gal, I think you can consider Cichla (Peacock Bass). They are a bit difficult to get in India but are beautiful.

If you have the right filtration, you can also consider Stingrays (motoro).

Other fish will be in the "dither" fish category and one of the best ones will be a school of Silver Dollars.

Other good fish, (not all of which are from the same area of the world) will be Arowanas, FL Gars, some species of catfish (Lima in particular), large plecos etc.

why do people buy fish like these if they cant provide for them properly?

For fantasy and the real love for fish. Just own a fish like this and you will know. We are discussing how to take care of them

I have 2 florida gars as well. Can i have your number sid. I would like to know where in india peacock bass could be got. As for the pima , i had ordered the fish some 6 years ago in a shop in chennai and had paid some amount in cash as advance. Good that the fellow at the lfs remembered. I got it at 15 K

hey gokul, I'm from Delhi. Quite a project you're thinking of taking on. Anyway, I say go for it. When your paima can't fit in the 12 footer I'm sure you can find a nice quite pond somewhere outside chennai for it. There are plenty of big fish farms outside of chennai. good luck and us updated.

Congrats and thanks for sharing :)

Maybe you can keep him in the 30 long enough to stunt him real good, I hear such dwarfed pimas dont get nearly as huge as healthy ones. If you cut back on the water changes you could keep him under 20 inches indefinitely!

One of my friends on MFK got a Pima very recently (sourced from Bombay). It was nearly the same price after shipping.

I have not seen Cichla for sale at any of the usual wholesalers in Bombay. These can be bought by "special order", but then the store charges ridiculous prices for any "special order".

When you do get these shipped from overseas, usually they are too small (to fit the budget for most of us) and may not survive the ordeal.

I will look around some more and PM you some contacts of premium stores in Bombay you can inquire at.

Cheers,
Sid

PS: Post some more pics of both your Pima and your Silver Aro.
