Coldwater Pond Questions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes they can be kept together but it is possible to see aggression but as long as they can't fit in the bass's mouth then you should be fine. Just be advised that if the sunfish is bigger but close to the size of the basses mouth they may try to eat them.

Okay. Thanks for all the info guys. I think I am going to stock this in stages so that aggression will not occur. Let me know if this is to much, or if I could possibly do something differently and come out with a better out come. I have a 55 gallon, and in about 2 weeks a indoor pond with about 450 gallons (for smaller turtles). I can use these as growouts and if agression occurs, temporary holding.

Stage one-- Koi. This pretty much has to be part of the deal due to family wanting them. The ones I will get will start off at about 6 inches. I plan on letting them grow to atleast 8 inches before I try and collect other fish.

For stage two I will find a smaller bass, if not two. I also will find decent sized other natives.

If this is overstocked I can defiantly take out some of the bigger fish and put them(Atleast 5 Koi says the mother).

Nice project. I would suggest bluegill and a few bullheads. Im guessing you are in the mountains with that -18 winter temp. I wouldnt think they could. I was told bowfin may work in those cool temperatures. There was also discussion of longnose gar in a cold water pond as they can live in canada.

Yep! The mountains is correct. I am really liking the look of bluegills, and have always been a huge fan of bullheads.

I would love to know if longnose gar could defiantly survive in there. Gars are one of my favorites. Have you had any experience with these?

No, Im on the east coast as well, Im setting up a 250 gallon pond in my garage. I havent actually had experience with gar. Let me do some research, but does your pond freeze in the winter?
Edit-Wikipedia says they live from Canada to Mexico so they may be able to handle both temperatures but not sure about the temperature change. They may also be a danger to the koi, but again Im not sure.

Yes, my pond freezes but never fully frozen. I plan on keeping the large waterfall running the entire winter, and keeping a de icer running. I have read your thread about your 250 pond. What did you stock in it? Let me know about the gar.

Im still working on the stock. Ive got a couple goldfish cycling it right now. I may just add minnows and goldfish if I cant find bowfin. I posted the link about the gars habitat in the wild. Id checko out the gar section and read the thread about them in cold water. Ill see if I can dig it up.

Looks like a longnose gar might could take the cold.
