Coldwater Pond Questions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just read a little bit. And it seems they could probably live in my pond, but they would defiantly go after koi. I beleive bullhead are one of their prey. So that means koi is on the menu too. Thanks though. Defiantly looking at bluegill.

I think that is the stock list I am gonna go with. If any agression occurs, I can move some stuff around. Will channel cats eat bluegill?

Also, can florida black bass survive these forzen temps? (i dont think so??)

yes black bass, or largemouth bass can. We have um here in Maine and if they can survive our winters they can survive in your pond.

I think the biggest issue with LMB is the warm temperatures. Depends, a large channel cat might eat a small blue gill but if its a smaller channel cat and a large bluegill it will work for a while. You may want to try an breed the bluegill, but yes the channel cat may eventually eat the bluegill but your pond should be able to hold a decent amount of bluegill though. I would toss in some minnows as feeders after QT, they should breed and so there will be some feeders.

Good way to look at it is if the fish in question is a piscivore it will eat any fish that it can fit in its mouth and may even try for things that wont.

Okay. I think I am starting to get an idea.

It is going to be hard to keep the sizes stable for everyone to survive. So how I am seeing it now is I have 2 choices. And 5 koi are in all of them.

1.I could do 5 koi, and a channel cat. Maybe possibly grow out some bass in the 55g, and 450g turtle pond, and then add them. But they could still get eaten.

2. The 5 koi, bluegill, minnows, and bass.

Thats basically my options right? Thanks for all the replys again guys.

Ahh. Alright. I am ordering fish wednesday. I think I am going to go with Koi, Channel Cat, and a good quantity of minnows. What types of minnows would survive in the said temps?

Fatheads AMA rowdy reds I would think would work. I'm a fan of albino channel cats with most lfs have if not you can get a channel cat from aquaculture store. Make sure that the koi are bigger than the channel cat. Also the channel cat will hide a lot when small I've heard.
