college majors

great thread, tons of smart people on here!

So my older brother went to University of Miami (FL) for marine biology back in the day and ended up changing majors after he realized how few jobs there are out there in the field. Or because he realized he would need to work a lot harder to be successful in that field!

I ended up trying to go the Electrical Engineering route and went to RPI for 3 years before moving back home. I joined a fraternity and thought college was more about just having fun than actually going to classes. So I ended up getting an Accounting Degree since I knew I would be able to get a stable job with that degree so I could pay back all my student loans. And now I work in public accounting, sigh.....

Advice to High School Kids or younger. Figure out what kind of person you are! There seem to be 2 kinds of people in the world, the people who's job is their life and people who work to enjoy their life outside their job. I know this is a huge simplification but overall is pretty true.

If I could do it over again I think I would just go to a cheaper State school and become a High school Math teacher. So I could do other stuff in the summer, either trying to make money some other way or traveling. This is mainly just because I would enjoy the extra time off and make a decent living.

Wow a lot of Florida marine biologists!

I'll have my bachelor's in marine biology (for lack of a better term) in May, from The New College of Florida. That is of course assuming I get off MFK and do my thesis.

Death Pony, would you happen to know a Nick Turner that's a senior at CNU?

and bl00 I saw you go to Goucher and I actually live down York Road in Rodgers Forge, such a small world, haha

Wow, that's crazy! Such a small world indeed.

What would you major in if you wanted to work at an aquarium, like caring for species in aquariums and studying them?

Most of that work is done by volunteers. There are a few paid staff that oversee the volunteers, but they mostly handle department paper work like ordering supplies, writing schedules and budget issues.

Those that are paid to be there are from a massive variety of backgrounds from accounting to veterinarians.

Really? so the people who get hands on with animals to care for them aren't even paid?

The vast majority of animal husbandry at zoos and aquariums is done by volunteers. There are so many people that want to do it that there is no need to hire it done.

At Mystic Aquarium in CT all tank cleaning, food prep and feeding and the vast majority of water quality is done by volunteers. About 80% of the exhibit interpretation is done by volunteers as well.

There is a waiting list of volunteers to scrub the algae out of the bigger exhibits wearing SCUBA gear. They must arrive already SCUBA certified and interaction with the animals is prohibited, and yet there are so many people that want to do it, there is a waiting list.

Educational programs are done by paid staff and there are staff that oversee the volunteers. Any one staff member has 3 or 4 volunteers working under them for most shifts.
