about wat size will this happen
which awnser are you looking for? when can you sex them or when will they get there color?
you can sex them now and color differs on each individual fish. ive had festae have nice color at 3 inches but most of them didnt have real good color until 4-6 inches. all depends on water quality and how happy the fish is and his surrounding on how brilliant the fish can look.

i have inch festae right now that show they're bars pretty regularly but i would say that they don't really start showing their tail spot and bars till around a half inch or so. but festae will show their bars corresponding with different moods, predominantly stress and showing dominance i've found in younger festae. take some pictures if you can and we'll do our best to tell you what we think.

females get the bright orange or red.
you can tell by looking at there front bar it goes upward from the base of the fish and forks off to make a y shape near the head. the tailspot is up high on the tail fin and not directly in the middle like a mayan.

hope to have those pics by friday to get out of doubts anyway thanks for giving me those clues to difer one from another.

If your trying to sex young Festae look to the top fin...............The males will have a black spot - the females will have a black line about 25% of the top fin in the front ,behind the head..........they'll show you this very early in life way before coloring...............when they color up males have a turqoise lower jaw the females is orange

Note the black line on the top fin of the RT on the left ........females will develop this really early even when still white.

Note the black spot under the Topfin on the right Males carry this from all but birth................these fish had these marks at less than "1

thanks duanes, beutiful fish by the way.

How reliable is the black dot method at sexing? Because I know using the blue spangles isnt 100% @ ~2" which we can see on the female above when younger. My 3" looks exactly the same as the female above too, slightest tinge of blue on lower and top fins but with blue spangles.
