How reliable is the black dot method at sexing? Because I know using the blue spangles isnt 100% @ ~2" which we can see on the female above when younger. My 3" looks exactly the same as the female above too, slightest tinge of blue on lower and top fins but with blue spangles.

Blue Spangling doesn't work for juvi's note the blue specs on the f's fins on the right they may keep them thru adulthood however the black line on the topfin is 100% accurate..........this is my 3rd batch of red terrors and by far my favorite of some 30 species of cichlids i have in the house.

Black fin works 99% of the time. This was one of my males at 5". I used to be confused whether he was male or female. Now with more experience in the same situation I think I would know the difference from the gold body and blue spangles, but I used to think the black fin was 100% accurate too.

So...from judging by everyones comments, you guys can sex 1.5" festae like the OP stated he has?

No offense to anyone, because Id love to know how thats done, but I dont think sexing them that small could be even 3% accurate. If Im wrong, someone please let me know how to do that. Ive had more than 30 fry and 8 grown adults and wasnt able to 100% sex them until they were about 4-5 inches. Theyve gone through so many different metamorphoses depending on tankmates, substrate, backgrounds, water temps & params etc that I dont feel they get their definite markings until they get at least 4-5 inches.

Baltons fish above this post is a perfect example. Id be willing to bet if you posted that picture without telling anyone its male, 99% of the people on here would tell you female because of the black in the fin, myself included until about a year ago when I had the same situation.

Bleh just when I thought I could part with the other little festae :/ Still got my fingers crossed for a female out of the 3 I have.

Honestly you got me there................never had a Male ever look like that just goes to show me expect the unexpected or nothing is truely what it seems.
