I thought you sold the bigger umbee?

He has been promised to a MFK member in California. I sent him an email this morning to see if he still wants him. If not, I can live with keeping the big guy.

Ok I was under the impression your big guy had been gone for a while now.

At what size should I be able to tell if my Umbee is male or female ? Is it true that males grow much faster than females during the baby stage ?

It can be confusing until they are 6-8", and it can be an imperfect art even then.

Generally, look for more spotting in males and a dark blotch in the dorsal of females. Once they get some size on them the difference is WAY beyond obvious (as can be seen in the great photos in this thread). You can always vent them for confirmation.

It is true that males generally grow faster than females. Not always but often, and that's not limited to this species. It is the same with most cichlids.

Thanks for the heads up. I hope mine is a male. The one I have is an f1 from jeff rapps. He gave me the biggest one the biggest ones from the spawn. I specified I wanted a male pretty bad and from the photos in this topic who can blame me.

Thanks pal. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy gets to that size. He has steadily put on size over the past year with no signs of slowing down yet. If you check my threads over the last year you will be shocked at how he has grown.

The great thing about the Umbees is how outgoing and active they are in the tank. Constantly moving back and forth and always ready to display when you get near the tank. No fear hear! He lets you know to back off when you get too close. Even the small male will get wild when he sees you approach his tank, mostly due to the fact that he's guarding fry. They are a pleasure to keep if you have the tank space. I know it's not easy to devote a huge aquarium to one fish but believe me it's worth it!

Thank GM, I have a 375gal (1400L) for my pair of 5inch umbees and my 8 inch female.
The tank is divided of course.
My bigger female will display and try to bite your face if you go near her 'pipe' ornament. She charges the glass trying to drive you away, very cool.

I have noticed they have a great awareness of what I am doing outside the tank. There is a 215gal (810L) directly across the room and the umbees in the big tank know what is going on when I start feeding the festae in the smaller tank. They get excited and swim up and down the glass like crazy!

They are the most aware and fearless species I have kept.

J
