There's a silver arowana at my lfs that has a pinkish color to it. When i asked one employee about it he said it was just dying, but when i went back a week later it was still swimming around on the surface. a different employee that day said it was "dyed", whatever that means. has anyone ever heard of this? it seem totally messed up if that's the case, but i was curious what the heck was going on there.

Ive heard but havent seen them yet... but silver arrowanas being dyd pink or blue.. like the parrot cichlids... its a horrible practice. most fish don't survive it.. and the dye fades over time.

I have never hear of it on arowanas but they do it to Oscar's and the Little fish with the Hart's and writing on them all the time

Every time I go to a pet store my wife always has to find that tank and make me come over to see what she found and she says honey I what these! I just slap her in back of the head and walk away she knows how much I HATE them fish

I have to say, as much as i disagree with the practice, part of me was thinking it would still be cool to bring it home. then i realized i'd probably be contributing to the market for them and my morality won out. although if i don't buy it someone else will... oh well. i guess i'll take the moral stance on this one.

You should have taking a picture of it I would have been interesting to see what It looked like.

The dye isn't the main problem I have with the dyed fish its I would not put a damn fish in any of my tanks that say love / mom / peace or a big hart on them I would puke everytime I walked buy the tank

good point, i'll probably make a trip up there tomorrow anyway because i'm a junky:) i'll take a pic if its still there, but it wasn't very impressive. not like a solid hue throughout, more visible in the fins. it would probably look pretty bad ass if it was a solid color. i guess us americans are just getting pretty jealous of all of the sweet looking asians that we can't get over here, so people are doing what they can to get some variety in the silvers.

yeah, when i was at another lfs the other day the guy there was talking about the tatoo ones they had. he said he wanted to get one that said "kiss my ass" on it. he was kind of a douche. he said he did call the suppliers that tatoo the fish and asked them to do it. luckily they wouldn't, but it got me thinking that there would probably be a market for fish with a little more interesting markings than hearts and stuff. probably would be labeled "animal cruelty", not like the fish know what the hell is written on them anyway. i guess it should all be labeled as animal cruelty but i haven't heard any outcries yet.
