Colorful fish for 4 ft tank suggestion

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmmm discus? German blue rams, gold rams, electric blue rams, Bolivian red ray tank. Could keep them all together in a 4ft

Goldfish, A livebearer tank, the mentazumae swordtail is awesome if you can get it, rainbows, A Tanganyikan tank with Cyrprochromis and N. Leleupi, Severums, A giant shrimp colony with 1000+ shrimp, not all together of course.

I like the all male tank, but can I add one at a time as I buy some and grow them in order to sex them? Or do I buy them all at once
It would be better to buy them all at once or at least in groups of multiples. They're not too hard to tell apart from females at a LFS, at least not in my experience, unless you're dealing with the haps. You can also just try to look around and see if you can contact a dealer/breeder who will put together a male peacock/hap package for you.

One at a time won't work. The new fish will get beat up. Get like 15 peacocks. If you can't do it all at once, do 5, then 5, and the last 5.

If you add them during feeding or a waterchange or while redecorating it should reduce aggression to newcomers

I can't believe it took until page two for someone to suggest discus. Lol. I think discus are easily the most colorful freshwater fish. You could easily do 8-10 in that 120, but no less than 6. If you don't mind putting the effort into growing them out you could start out with juvies. Just be prepared to do a 50% water change, minimum, every other day. However, if your funds allow, you can go for adult 5-6" discus to go ahead and stock the tank up. It will be an expensive start up but you will save a lot of headaches from the grow out process.
