Colorquartz, which grade?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There's different brands of pool filter sand and some have bigger or smaller grains. 3M Colorquartz is the size of the Home Depot pool filter sand (not the playsand). It's pretty fine but it's heavy, I love it. The Colorquartz T grade is more granular (sharper). Not sure if it's enough to make a difference to sand sifting fish & plecs as I've never used the T grade.

Thanks. I really like the size and weight of the pool filter sand I have, from leslies pool supply, but the color is a little too light colored. How often do you stir your sand? I dont completely stir my pfs very often and I havent had any issues with anaerobic bacteria which is another reason why I like it.

I syphon all through it with every weekly or bi-weekly water change. The whole idea of anaerobic pockets in sand is pretty debateable said to be one of those myths that won't die. I'm just repeating what I read, don't want to debate it :-) And I agree-most pool filter sand is way too bright for my tastes.

Thats about what I am doing now, but I have heard things like sand needing to be stirred every other day with play sand, and all sorts of other "ideas".

The pool filter sand isnt super white, its got a lot of variation and looks pretty good, I am just thinking about adding some dark s grade colorquartz to it to darken it up.

S grade Colorquartz averages 0.21mm or .008 in size. I think the average pool sand grain is .45mm to .55mm for #20 grade.
