Not sure what the local differances in Walmarts are but ours is clean, well kept and the fish department looks well kept as well. The water is always perfect looking and I see very few dead fish. They have good turnover in fish and that may explain much of it. I have one oscar from there and I am just getting started stocking my 600 gallon tank. I doubt I will stock any more from there, not because their fish look bad but because they have nothing else I want to stock. There are no other LFS near me that I would buy from so my next best bet is from a distributer a friend of mine can get me in with.
I can understand the mentality of Walmart bashing but I can't justify that with ours as its very clean and well kept. I have however been to many that I felt I was at the bottom of the barrel.
My Wal-Mart must be an exception. It is the cheapest place to buy fish in town (mind you that isn't saying much, there are only three), but they are healthy. I know that's not saying much for the LFS but, it's the truth. They even clean the tanks.
I was in their fish area one night buying a new air pump. Was with a friend that said look, a male and a female betta for your 3 gallon eclipse that wastes space on your table in the living room. Was bully'd in to buying them. The pair lasted 3 days in good shape, the male beat the female badly killing her and he lasted about 2 minutes after that. I was kinda pissed that he'd killed that female I dropped him in my convict tank.
End of story.
a while ago I saw an ornate bichir mislabled in a dojo loach tank. Didn't have my wallet on me, but you can bet that I would have taken it, regardless of me feelings towards wallys
