Common Freshwater Fish to Avoid in Home Aquaria

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should add goldfish as the "average" people keep goldfish in bowl and 1gal hexagon tank and dont realized that the goldfish will outgrow the bowl and smaller tanks. Even fancy goldfish can grow big. Im not sure if Koi should add to your article as they are common in LFS as juvies but not too many people keep them in tank. Then again you should add koi carp too.

Wow, those are huge goldfish. Goldfish are probably the most commonly abused fish. MANY people buy them and start out with them. They are thrown in bowls. I won a goldifsh at a carnival once whenh I was a kid. Threw it in my tank and that goldfish got huge. I didnt even know at that time they even got that big. It must have grown about 7-8 inches before it died. Very nice fish and it was pretty responsive.

Most die before they even grow, thats why most people dont realize their size.

True 70% of them die but some survived and become stunted. Therefore the OP should add goldfish and koi to his articles as the goldfish are most abused fish around the aquarium world.

The newbies avoid the koi because of their price but again some pond keepers dont realized that the koi are very huge fish too and the newbies often keep a group of koi juvies in small pond. 25+ inches long ones are common in advaced pond keepers' pond.

I love you! in brother way....lol

Now heres more common "monster" species, sure they're not monster but still huge for average home aquarium.

Bala shark
Blackfin catfish
Black shark
Silver dollars
Chinese sailfin sucker
Tinfoil barbs
Ghost black knife
Koi
Kissing Gourami
Dragon goby
Red bellied piranhas

as they are more common species sell in LFS as juvies. Just let you know, how many juvies of these species from LFS actually made to the adulthood?

Those are good.
I'll be sure to get a couple of them done tommorow, but I'm done for the night.

All edits done. PM us next time to curb confusion.

I commend you for making the post, but I didn't actually read it. A bit short on time at the moment, and I feel that I know enough about what not to buy- even when it's tempting as hell and the hand is reaching for the wallet...

Anyway, it's a great guide for beginners. Only thing I'd add - and this is only b/c I'm scientifically minded - is that latin names are capitalized for the genus and lowercase for the species. (i.e. Limulus polyphemus)

Yeah, I know you know what you're doing. I kind of meant it as a beginner's guide, so thanks for thinking it's good.
As for the scientific name, I wasn't real careful with punctuation, but I'll fix it one day if I have time.
