commonly said things about oscars

When I was new to fish keeping, many told me that oscars were mean and will bite your fingers off if you stick your hand in the tank. And I was also told they were extremely aggressive. So I didn't get one for a while, but I couldn't help it one day when I saw little baby ones at the LFS.
Sure they might be messy and tear up any plant...plastic or real, but they have so much personality, and I don't think they are any messier than my puffers. I think my GSP make the top of the list for being the messiest.
And as others have said, yes you gotta keep up with water changes and such, just like with any other responsibility.

you will have to change the water all the time
they are crap machines
theyre worse than plecos
youll have to vaccum the gravel often

are these true or not because if they are im seriously going to reconsider getting an oscar
p.s. im new to cichlids so dont flame

yes they are all true BUT oscars are really cool fish with dog-like personalities.

more of a pet than just some fish in a tank.

Oscars require extra care (no lazy fish keepers should own one).
Ahh come on I'm a lazy fish keeper and I have have 6 of them. But I also designed my tank around the heavy bioload and my laziness :D I still want one more but I'm out of space :(

so build an indoor pond for O's and friends. and your automated water changing set up would all work the same on it.

ocars are messy because when they are actually eating food they caugh it all over and little peices go everywhere.

oscars are crap machines because of their appetite. i own one and the highlight of my morning is feeding my oscar. because it is fun to feed therefore u give it more food then it poops a lot.

oscars are great if yo have tank space get one. that is is. they are really not any more work than other cichlids their size.
haha i think thats hilarious, just how you said it

the footprint can be huge compared to a tank so you can house alot more O's

dude i got a normal oscar the coolest lookin o's ive seen except i saw a platinum oscar at my local wal mart..... weird huh i was gunna buy it but was like naw. i love mine and he is a messy eater thats why u get a bottom feeder. or other lil dithers like firemouths which will sit around the oscar at feeding time and wait for it to cough it food out its gills and they all will eat it but all cichlids do this.... my jags do it too also like everyone says they are very personable. ontop of that u should do minimal of 1 water change a week and 1 gravel vacum a month. with any fish. its all about u dude its your fish tank keep what u want and best way to find information out about fish is to get it and watch their behaviors. ive been keepin fish tanks for 8 years now and ive went through about 30 fish. thats because my first 3 years were survival of the fittest. and kept the meanest toughest fish. most of the deaths were responsible to blackouts. but anyways in the end oscars are a nice fish just wait till u see the one you want then buy it

My little monster, a rescue, currently resides in a pond with a variety of friends. When I walk up it is the only one that swims to the side to say hello. I know it's only looking for food like the little pig it is, and I shouldn't attribute higher intelligence and emotions on it, but it's my little delusion, back off.:screwy:
