well its not to bad cus u can actually make a really nice looking tank, My dad used to have a sick set up if i can find some pics of it i'll post em. But basically for a nice looking set up u can grab a nice looking pleco, stripped raphael catfish, a school of neon tetras because they do better in schools so 6+, a betta just make sure its a female cus some male ones will mistake colorful fish for other male bettas, some sunset platys, glowlight tetras but u need a school of them because they do better in schools of 6+,neon blue gouarmi and dwarf gourami look really good in a tank. Also if u can plant it well.
Heres a set up for a 55 that would look good imo, 6 neon tetras, 2 dwarf gouarmis, 2 neon dwarf gouramis, a female betta, nice looking pleco, couple fancy tail guppies, and a stripped or spotted raphael catfish. For plants a piece of driftwood covered in Glossotigma Elatinoides and Java Moss looks incredible in a tank if u can get a couple of them heck even 1, heres a link of 1 for sale with pic on it http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?driftwood&1207468801 , Also i'd grab a couple pots of narrow leaf java fern or any type of java fern, heres a link and pic for it same site http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?liveplantsb&1207896964 . also toss in a floating plants like Salvina Minima, heres a link and pic of it http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?liveplantsf&1207442773 . Then to make it really look eye catching get some Red Cherry Shrimp, they are great tank cleaners for community tank and look good ill put a pic at the end of post. Also a couple singapore wood shrimp, the look good and they filter feed so they will take some stuff out of the water, ill put pic at end of post of them to. and heres a site u can order the shrimp from if u want them http://www.azgardens.com/shrimpfactory.php

You could do a cool SA community, with rams and angelfish (I think that would work) maybe some pictus catfish also. Planted would look great also. If possible, try and convince her to forget about the sissy fish and get a big cichlid.

heres pic of the plants and some of the fish i talked about
