These little guys are powerful! So far, they've spent their days battling a very strong current (2 AC110s on their end), and ripping algae off the back wall. If these guys don't grow up pure muscle, I'll be amazed. I'm thinking tonight or tomorrow I'll be moving them to their own seperate 20g long to grow-out. I'll be doing daily 50% water changes on the fry tank, with 5 or 6 small feedings through the day of Daphnia and baby brine shrimp for optimal growth. I'm thinking of putting 2 AC110s on the 20 long also, for as much current as possible (the filter intakes will be wrapped in a filter bag so they don't get sucked in) to see if they build alot of muscle swimming against it all day.

just get some sponge filters. thats all i have on my 20g long and they are doing great.

Interesting...

Oh I have plenty of seeded sponge filters, however I want to see if the Cons will develop larger-than-average muscles by fighting a strong current (for their sizes) as they grow.

They may stay Leaner. As river fish in strong rivers usually have more ellongated look :).. But you'll just have to show us :)

I definately will. I remember seeing a couple Convicts that had been given some sort of experimental 'fish steroid' and they were total monsters. About 6'', humps like a camel's on their head, and literally bulging with muscle. I'd love to have a similar fish, but I'm not really comfortable with injecting a fish (or anything) with Steroids unless it's to save it's life, not just to please myself.

They're already growing soo fast! I find it very fascinating to just sit and watch them bite off bits and peices of algae from rocks. I notice whenever I open the shade to the window (about 3 feet from the side of the tank) the fry rush at it, and remain there for the remaining time the shade is open. Here's a neat little picture of some of the fry tearing at algae by their "home base"

Bad bad news! The male completely tore up the female, and I think I just managed to save her. I transfered most of the fry to a 20long, and put the mother with them. I left some with the male to see how they end up.

Best shot I could get of the female in her new temp. home with her fry.

Dude, that sucks. But I've never heard of a fish with huge guns. I highly doubt that having an overlly strong will make them stronger, I actually think it'll weaken them to a degree.
They can swim against it in the day, but at night when they 'sleep' they'll just drift and prolly bump into things. Think of a current as a gentle breeze, you love it but not a huge one, same goes wirh with, except for fish the naturally swim upstream in the wild.

I thought about that, so in the tank is now just one of those cheap Tetra-Whisper internal filters with the intake covered in a stocking and a sponge filter. I'm doing 50% daily water changes on the fry/female tank, and feeding crushed pellets and flakes, with the occasional diced bloodworm.
