Con Solo the Convict

In the cichlid world, females test the males. These "test" normally involves at least one full on fight before they accept as a mate and breed. If she can dispatch him, then how good of a protector can he be. Males have a defense of this of sorts. The hormones they excrete to control the females growth. So the males stays bigger than her and can easily defend himself.

The first time Goldie Hawn was testing Casper made me laugh so much. He had already double her size but she still insisted to finish the process.

These are after they both accepted each other but show how his hormones can still effect her with my every three day water changes.

Thanks Jexnell. This is incredibly interesting information, and something I'm just now learning for the first time.

To add, when my blood parrot and convict briefly paired she would pretty consistently beat on the parrot every time they laid.

Thought I’d do a one week update on the pair since I introduced the two to each other last Thursday. Not much has changed yet. Leia’s still testing Solo, nipping at his fins. She’s done a tiny bit more damage over the course of the last few days, but it’s very minimal. Hopefully they’re able to sort things out with a bit more time and Solo can stop being big fat pushover .

Some photos of the two. Not great photos, but I really just wanted to show the change of color these two have gone through. This is obviously common knowledge across this forum lol, but seeing it first hand now still fascinates me.

And after pairing up. Or I guess kind of pairing up :

Leia’s bars basically went from light grey to black and she’s definitely showing off those blue fins more now. Solo always had unique coloration, but now went from a yellow/beige kind of color to a more brown color. His fins have gone from bright red to almost a maroon. Also looks like his nuchal hump is just slightly more pronounced.

Just wanted to share this. Today Solo seems more confident in asserting himself. And when he does, Leia backs off. Which I guess is a good sign.
