Well, got a surprise today. Went to a MD Petco I visit and bought a few small supplies. Got to check out to find that someone is using my phone number to get Petco specials and discounts. MY name isn't showing on my customer ID but a phony one is??? Disturbing is the fact that they don't take addresses so basically you can go in and use anyone's phone number to set up an account!! WTF. I spoke with the manager about removing the bogus name and they can't do it. He claims once they place the name in the system they can't remove it and I would have to call customer service BUT they are a third party company overseas. I don't care, I'm following through. There's only one of two ways this could have happened.One, when I set up my account someone overheard my phone number. I've always hated this policy and most stores don't do it anymore. I usually write it down, hand it to the cashier and take the paper with me when I leave.

Two, it's an inside job. There's no way in hell someone living in MD is going to just 'get' my area code land line number. So calling the customer service number got me nowhere. Just the recording apologizing for 'volume of calls'. Never reached anyone. I'm going online next. Completely pissed at finding this out.

The upshot is that my name is on the account as well BUT with my email address to receive discounts. I

still want that name off my account.

Pure Bull++++:swear:

wow, that's pretty nuts, I wonder why somebody would do that. The way the pals rewards system works, every 100 dollars you spend, you get 5 bucks back which is automatically loaded and applied next time you make a purchase, after the 100 dollars spent. Would be difficult for somebody to take advantage of that, they'd basically have to monitor your account and wait for you to spend 100 dollars, then go in and spend more than 5$, to get the 5$ discount. Seems like a ton of work for very little gain. Are you positive you never gave them your phone number in the past?

And yeah, the overseas call center is awful. I've called them a few times and they are little to no help, one time they just told me "I don't know, can't help you with that" when I was calling for an employee account issue. And corporate just directs you to that number.

The only way they would have my number I can think of is someone overhearing it at the cash register when they asked if I wanted to join. Whatever happened was recent. So later I decided to 'log on' to the account given to my number. Mysteriously its now disappeared and I've been given a new ID to go with my new account. It has my information and the same number so I'll see what happens. I'll go online and try the chat tab.

Or an inside job. For information that 'couldn't be removed' it sure disappeared quickly. If they don't take any information at the store other than phone numbers its a miracle they haven't had ID theft everywhere.

If it wasn't a big deal why did the issue disappear suddenly? I could troll phone numbers in a book and use 'em, then...solid buisness isn't run that way.

I had someone at work wipe out my bank account before a holiday weekend. Turns out one of the tellers did it (fired) assuming they could replace the money by monday and I wouldn't miss it. The 'investigation' turned up a hand written note tor the withdrawal, with my name mispelled and a letter upside down. A joke, considering you had to sign and present visual ID for all transactions. The director of the CU wouldn't reveal the culprit name, they were worried about a lawsuit (and would have gotten one).

ID theft big or small ain't cool. And its the small stuff that's harder to trace. Like hack ATM's at gas stations that take the pin off your card and make charges on it. Just numbers, ya know?

Tbh when I see a post that’s long I don’t really read them I have no idea what’s going on other than you’re tripping out on your number being used. I mean I was trying to be friendly and offer you my discounts if you want it lol. Identity theft goes much more than someone using solely a phone number. I think you’re ranting a tad much on this issue. In order for someone to wipe out your bank account they must be close to you, know your personal information. I mean I write hundreds maybe thousands of check annually that have my bank and routing number, I’ve never had an issue, my bank would text me on any suspicious activity and if they didn’t the transaction would be reversed

I think you are underestimating the chance that someone just signed up or used a made up number and it happened to be yours.
hahhahhha i do this all the time at all retailers that ask for numbers... if i forget my last "alias". i make another up . random numbers . if they are like ohh your mr. so and so.. yeap . thats me. now gimme my discount lol.

I kinda do the same. I just use my phone number, but just change one of the digits. This is why I hardly get telemarketing calls. Whereas, my wife uses her actual number, and get telemarketing calls all the time.
