Connecting tanks?? anyone seen this or done it?

Exactly, so putting an air bubbler in the upright part is only going to create a need for a second pump to remove the air that the bubbler is putting into the top tank, aside from someone just wanting to over complicate the whole idea i see no reason to have the bubbler lol.
 
OK! I found out what they are using to get the air out. They are using a dosing pump. There's a product called a Aqua-Lifter made by Tom Aquatics looks like an airpump but designed to lift liquid for dosing. People are using them to suck and blow air instead of liquid which it was designed for. The end that normally sucks liquid they place on the top inside the enclosed tank to suck and circulate the air back down through an airstone. So the same air just keeps circulating around. The trick is to hide the tube that's sucking the air so people can't see what's going on.

I've always wanted to really experiment with aquarium design like this.
 
they could possibly use check valves or something of the sort that would let air out without disturbing the seal, kind of like a DIY overflow
