I believe males also tend to have longer fins. I currently have two females and one male. The male tried pairing up with the female but she picked a bad location and the eggs got eaten. Then he paired up with the other one, she picked a good location and now I have fry in my tank. Now the male appears to be spending his time between protecting the fry and trying to court the other female.
I am considering getting them a dedicated tank because I can see that there will be issue with the other fish if I have two sets of fry going at once.
