Hello,

Ive personally never kept a Bichir before, altho I have been interested in doing so since I joined MFK. My walmart carries senegals and and as does my LFS but the wallyworld ones look 10X better so Ill be going that route. These fish are about 3" long I suppose. I will probably put the young fish into a 35G tank with playsand and 6 1-1.5" convicts. Unless of course he cant hold his own just yet...then Ill put him in a 10G bare bottom until he gets some size on him. Id just like some basic info on the species such as how large they get, temperment and etc :)

Thank you for that link, it was very helpful :)

I will be feeding the new little guy HBH super soft sinking pellets, shrimp pellets, flakes, frozen bloodworms and mysis shrimp. Same thing I feed the cons. Once a pair forms with the cons Ill remove the pair and probably use the others for either Piranha or Bichir food...whichever comes first. Its good to know that Senegals dont get to large. Also once the fish hits a nice girth(id say around 9-10") ill probably move him to my 150G. How do they fare with gravel? Ive heard alot of mixed results with Bichirs and gravel.

I currently have my senegal on gravel, but that will change as soon as my 100L is up and running. I will probably do a sand gravel mix, primarily sand however.

i have a 3'' senegal. great fish. its in a 10gallon bare bottem till it can hold its ground in the 75. good luck and welcome to the addiction (its worse than cigarettes).:grinno:

either barebottom or sand. Welcome to the bichir world. A little while ago I got my first senegal, now I have 1 lapradei, 1 delhezi, 2 senegals, 1 endlicheri, and 2 palmas. I still want more

Thanks everyone :) Oh Im sure it will be addictive, but unless I order online a Sen. is the only bichir I have ever seen around here...and even then its rare. I guess Ill figure something out for his permanant housing as he grows, I dont really want to convert my 150G to sand. I could convert my parents 75G to sand tho it would be a much easier undertaking. But to my understanding hes going to be good as gold in my 35G grow out tank for quite some time. One last question, about how soon should I expect a 2-3"er to hit about 9"?

Most senegals max out around 11-12" from what I understand. Mine jumped from about 3-4 up to 6+ in about 2 months. So they seem to grow quickly, at least for a while.

Sengs max out at a length of 12-14 inches. You'll never see a girth of 9 inches (girth is the circumference around it's stomach at the widest point). If the cichlids are only an inch long, the seng might eat a few. I have my 3 inch seng eating 1.25-1.5 inch long rosy red minnows.
