Considering a Senegal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you will absolutley love them..they chew their food like a dog.. throwing it and then they try to find it..they are adorable.. definitly addicting.

Wow I havent yet entered the world of Bichirs, but it does sound like youve had a horrible experience. Maybe try feeding some sinking foods while your feeding your cichlids? I know that in my tanks with bottom dwellers I feed my other fish let them eat for a few seconds and dump in my bottom feeders food so they can eat in peace for a few minutes :) My LFS was supposed to order mine last week and it *should* already be there and Im going to hopefully pick it up on friday...we'll see if that actually manifests itself. Seems that when I was just considering them they were every where and now that I really need a Bichir...they all vanished and seem hard to get :(

The tank that the Bichir was supposed to go into started to leak, which isnt suprising as I got it used probably a good 10 years ago and it was an old tank then. Ive chose not to bother with re-sealing it and will pick up a new 3ft tank after Xmas to fit on the dual stand the old tank went on. I did acquire a lovely little Peacock eel for a tankmate for the future Bichir which seems to be loving his little holding tank for the moment....hell hes away from Petsmart Id be happy to :)

I went the week before last to see if they had any Bichirs since my LFS is BSing around ordering mine, since they usually do...but of course they didnt. But while I was browsing the fish some kid like 9-10years got a Peacock eel out of the tank I guess because it looked cool. He showed the mom his bag when she came back from getting something and all she had to say was the fish was discusting. Well about 15minutes later I found the same bagged up fish shoved on a shelf in the fish section. I just took the little guy home since I had considered getting a Peacock anyway, and Im sure he'd have had the same fate again or worse. Hes an interesting fish and Im sure he will only grow in intrest in a few weeks when he can get out of that 10G and into something more appropriately sized for his future size :)

yeah started feeding him floating pellets when i found out he would swim up to feed. maybe theyre not as bad as i said they are but theyre not gonna be like cichlids swimming up to the glass to be fed. sorta like having a lizard. forgot about the fact that they are bottom feeders.

Glad you saved the peacock eel. It should get along fine once you finally get your Senegal. I have my peacock eel in w/ my 2 sens and haven't seen any issues between them. :) My peacock spends the majority of his time buried in the sand anyways, hard for him to cause problems with any of my fish :grinno:

LOL thats about all mine does, I setup the tank for him and put only maybe a 1/2" of sand and the eel tried to burry but didnt get anywhere....so I cleaned some more and put in there and he has about an inch now and often times you just see his head sticking out of the sand. I havent seen the fish eat anything since Ive got him...but the food is always gone so I assume he eventually does eat it. The filtration is an oldschool clear plastic box of carbon and floss thats air driven...so I know its not doing much for sucking the food up.
