I wouldnt do gravel it's just too risky, you will regret it if it does die from swallowing gravel.

I have a senegal bichir, and he's never had problems with gravel.

Anway, welcome to the bichir addicition! Senegal bichirs are my favorite.

Yeah but there is a chance he could accidentally swallow gravel and die.. Why risk it? all you have to do is change to sand....

My 150 has a very wide assortment of gravel sizes the very small gravel i wouldnt worry about but it has some large chunks in there to so he probably wont be going there. Guess we'll just have to wait and see which tank I feel like converting when the time comes. :) Thanks for the advice tho...Ill probably pick up one this friday :D

Walmart was naturally out of bichirs. So Im going to see if my LFS can order me one or two. But while I was there I found some gravel...which is tiny grain size. Each individual gravel is about the size of a grain or rice....would this be alright for a bichir? Ill probably try to get them to get me a slightly larger fish of around 5" instead of 3" babies ive seen around. I hate the fact that I cant really vacuum sand and fish poo and food tends to just lay around ontop of it.

I see that you are from Va as well. Where in Va. I go to the petsmart in the Bull Run Plaza and and they have had senegals all the time. That is were I got mine from.

I live in Grundy VA, if youve heard of The Appalachian School of Law....thats the town I live in. We are a VERY small town and the closest Petsmart is about 2 hours away, and the closest walmart is an hour away. I am thankfully more than happy to travel :) It was kind of disapointing because my walmart has had senegals everytime Ive been there for the last month, like atleast 15-20 of them in prime condition....and the time I go to buy one they dont have any and the little tag for them was gone. Guess thats the luck tho. :) Saw your sig and you seem to have a very interesting stock list...bet they look wonderful together being all so diffrent.

Thanks for the comment and the fish in my signature aren't the only ones the complete list in my tank setup option under the post. I will be seperating the oscar and the 2 SD to my other 55.

I will :) Anybody think that rice sized gravel will be alright? I think it should be oK...its supposidly preferable to rays since they can blow it and play in it. Its really smooth and IMO looks better than playsand...plus I could give it a good vacuuming :D But I also dont want something that is going to potentially injure my bichir when I finally do get my hands on one :)
