Considering sand where to buy and how much

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used 200lbs of sand in the tank, giving me a 2-3" sand bed. I washed 5g buckets of it at a time, spending almost 30 minutes washing each bucket. And I still had problems with it. I would never use it again.

Yes, you can gravel vac it. Just be a little gentle, as you can pull the grains up into the hose if you push too deep or hold it for too long in the sand. But you should only need to skim the surface, and occasionally dig deeper. Just try to keep the depth about 1-1.5" and it shouldn't be a problem.

On second thought any one use the black sand for sand blasting? I think its called black beauty sorry for hijack but its related.

If you want to order your sand online you can get CaribSea sand for $19.99 per 20# from Pet Solutions. As long as you spend more than $99 shipping is free. There isn't anyone that carries it locally for less where I live, so that is what I did. I actually got it for $17.99 when it was on sale, but that sale is over.

It isn't cheap, but it is nice stuff. I have 220 pounds in my 210, it varies from one to five inches in depth, about three inches if it was uniform depth.

What are you trying to keep? I just took the gravel out of my 210 and replaced it with Caribsea's torpedo beach. I'm moving 2 motoros in there from a smaller tank. The sand in my smaller tank keeps getting kicked up and sucked into the overflow and filters. The torpedo beach is still small but not so fine that it will get blown around from the fish or your returns. Pool filter sand should be fine for most fish, but since it's silicated, it's not considered stingray safe, though many people use it for rays. I got my sand from petsolutions.com with free shipping. Their prices are very fair and I got my order the day after I placed it even with regular ground shipping.

Awesome guys thanks for the input can u gravel vac the pool filter

The way I clean my sand is I use a gravel vac take the tube off and just use the hose and hover over the top. I have playsand in my tanks hopefully will be switching to pool filter sand soon.

I gravel vac my PFS and have use a method of letting the sand build up half way up the intake tube then pinching the hose and letting it fall out of the tube. I've heard it is better to agitate the entire depth of sand so nothing can settle in the deeper layers and turn funky. I had play sand and there is no way you would be able to do this without losing half your sand down the drain. PFS is a larger grain sand that acts more like a very fine gravel than sand imo. PFS much better imo.
