Considering sand where to buy and how much

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im using caribsea a really white fine sand in a 90 gal its working good for me but it was like $22 for a 10 lb bag lol

I use non toxic play sand. I had it set up where I had water running through it through the hoze pipe, about 10 minutes each 10 kg bag, and its perfect. Apart from the thihng about what someone else said, you cant have flow pointing towards the bottom, but my filters dont get damaged AT ALL. in fact, I have my fx5 intake right on the sand at the bottom to take the dirt off the bottom of the tank, no sand really gets sucked up, only when its been suspended by a fish thrashing or something. And my filter has sand in it, not much and my impeller is still perfect... also I have another tank with the same sand and the impeller is fine on that too. Dont know where these horror stories of impeller eating sand come from though.. I got my sand for less than $6, or about $10.

i think over time the sand particles constantly against the spinning impeller wears it out sooner.i just mixed PFS with 2 larger size gravel in my 55. i like the contrast of the sizes.i would suggest taking a few cups of the intended mix and put in a small tank,10 gal. to see how it looks before

Dang that's awsome what grade did you go for I found a website that sells the stuff went to order it and had no clue about the sizes and what not so i decided to wait and ask around a bit lol. Do you have it I'n your tank yet? If so I'd love to see how it looks

I've used it in quite a few tanks. This batch is 2/-16 grade. I've used one grade coarser and one grade finer than this, so I think this is my happy medium. If you search some old threads of mine or look at JK47s tanks you will find lots of pictures of it. :)
