Convert 29g fresh to 30b reef?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah def go to marco rock they are cheapest anywhere, saves you money just takes a little longer to look pretty but personally i would rather spend less and take the time to grow it out, also curing live rock is easy before you put fish in all you just have to wash it off really good and stick in tank with good flow and light if parameters are good then things will prosper and cover the rocks, also those "spots" are coralline algae and they are VERY good to have, some dont like the look and scrape it off personally i think it gives the tank a more natural look, you want this algae in your tank because it keeps other types of nuisance algae from spreading (only certain amount of nutrients in tank, if coralline is using them all then there is non for nuisance algae to grow on) also having alot of coralline in your tank is a very good indicator that your tank is thriving as this is kind of a finicky algae, usually when you get good colonies of this its indicator that your tank is ready to try corals

oh and if your tank is only 29g you would only need like 35lbs rock at most, you still want the fish your going to keep to have room to swim around and yeah live rock is one of the biggest expenses in setting up a tank IMO IF you dont shop around around here i can find rock on sale at petco for like $5plb but there rock is never very pretty and is always really dense, the more porous the rock you can get ahold of the better (more places for BB to grow and is lighter as well)

Let me help you out a bit before you spend any more money. For flow if you want SPS then 2 Korillia 2 or 3's would work best if it's not SPS then a single 3 and a 1 or 2 would work for you. Don't have the power head blasting at a coral you'll just kill it. Do have the power heads pushing a water stream into each other to create a more random flow. Buy a turkey baster and keep any dead spots blasted out every few days.
Buy base rock you can find it as bulk reef supply or marco for a good price, buy what you need for the whole tank. Next get 1 piece of live rock from a local reefer or from craigs list or LFS that is a few pounds and very porous. Set your tank up and run it for a few months with just 2 small fish like clowns. Be prepared for top off water lots of testing and water changes. When the tank stays stable for a week then look for some coral. Try to stay away from things that end up being a nuisance like anthelia, green star polyps, and things like that. You'll end up feeling like your weeding your garden after awhile.

These guys are selling Live rock for $10/lbs i think fiji, and if u think 35 is the most then thats still $350! I was thinking of getting all 30-35lbs dry rock and adding additives to make the dry rock all live, also i'll be using live sand... idk what size though, either a 20lbs or a 40lbs?

Wow! 2 - 3 powerheads?! I was thinking just one hydro 2 would be even to much! The guy at my LFS says thats good because i was going to do a 55 filter on the back of rocks and then jus point the hydro 2 on the front line so theres kinda a all around flow, or get two 1's and point them from top to bottom in X formation so i can avoid dead spots... So what do you suggest for powerheads as i will be keeping anenomie and all kinds of coral most likely, probably a feathduster or two... definatly a few frags also with a few polyps too... Please help =/

where are you getting $10 a lb at? i looked and you can get 40lbs african razi with shipping for $170 making it 4.25lb, also you can only add some bacteria with the bottles and maybe things to boost coralline but actual coralline and organisms in the rock have to be added through other live rock. also you can get dry sand from marco rocks as well and then get a handful of live sand from some's established tank spread it over the top of you sand and it will grow in no time, i would prolly get the 40lb bag if thats your only 2 choices as this will give you a little extra to work with so you wont have to worry about wasting any when you rinse the sand

$170 is still alottt of money im really not trying to look like a cheapass here but can i get 10lbs live for like $80 and get like 20lbs dry??

BTW, i can't really rinse the sand, i dont get what you mean, the sand comes in a bag that's filled with water that already has some of the chemicals inside of it and it's "ready-to-dump" into the tank, am i right?

hey i hear you thats the whole reason i decided to wait on saltwater lol but i was saying to use dry rock to begin with you were the one that was saying live rock, i would get like 30lbs dry then just go get a little 5lb hunk from CL or something and youd be set

I can get 3$/lb from CL but they guy is an hour n 15mins away and idk if my dad would do it, plus like i told you guys, i still have life fish in my tank =/

Hey guys i currently have a 29gallon freshwater tank... the T5's are on sale for $139 for a 36" and im thinking of buying it then getting a breeder and just waiting till all my fish pass so that i could make a reef tank, what do you guys think? or would it be smarter for me to just stay with the 29 and get a 30" T5?

I would get the 29 gallon and the 30" T-5's there are always cheap tanks you can find at LFS on used equipment sales, craigslist, and ebay just take your time to check who is selling it and look carefully at all the seals and smell the inside of the tank for any bleach or odd smell's

mr.reef24

mr.reef haha you didnt read, i have the 29 already, u dont remember? It's been up for so long now, i wanna know if that T5 will be stable for SPS, LPS, Frags, and anenomie.. And i need to figure out how much live rock and how much dry rock to use at a reasonable amount/pricing..

Don't waste money on live sand just get sand and rinse before it goes in the tank. The sand bed will become live just like dry rock does after seeding and some time. Find a local reefer and try to get a cup of sand from that person. Find your local reef club forum and start your q's over there and you'll end up with local help which is what you need right now.(used equipment, sand, rock)
