Converting from fresh to reef tank!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't be surprised to find the Mandarin belly up pretty soon, they are very touchy lil critters, but they do look nice! I certainly hope not though.

One question I have for you before you start adding (some very expensive) corals, inverts, did you ever use copper in the tank when it was fresh? if so don't bother with the inverts as they will likely die. Invertebrates do not fare well with copper, its basically Anthrax for coral and it never leaves the tank once used. I have heard people say they used copper on a reef w/o problems but I would investigate it myself before spending a boatload of money. Fish will be fine.

If you are not sure, monitor the inverts (shrimp, crabs and anything which may have hitched a ride on your live rock) you have right now and see what happens to them, I would give them and extended time to react. If you never used copper then no worries.

Otherwise the tank looks awesome, good job!

There are a lot of tricks to be learned as a salty, your journey has just begun!

Also let me add, I have been out of the game for a couple of years and do not have a tank running currently, there is much knowledge to be had on this board DO NOT take my word as gospel!

question to the experts..is it possible for my coral banded shrimp to eat any of my fish...im asking cause one of my clowns is missing..its either him or the emerald crab thats in there

That's what's been said about them but I have mine with clowns & they're all accounted for.

I don't have an answer to your missing clown but I do want to pass some advice to you.

1st point. I'm not trying to argue just my two sense.

A. You did start your tank very hastily... I would have done the same thing so don't think I'm scolding you lol you just need to realize many people will get upset at the speed people like you and me set up our new tanks. I did a brackish in one day. Nearly killed my violet goby. I still kick myself for that one.

So yes we need to move slower when dealing with the lives of out fish. They deserve it.

B. I like your tank so far. You have done a good job on design and stocking variety.

Here is what I had and it worked for me for three years before I switched to FW. OB Home made filter ran with a power head and used BIO balls. (my dad was the saltwater expert who ran an operation in San Antonio Texas called Ocean Expressions So it was one of the old ones he made. He's a genius) It was rated for 100 Gal. I used it on a 27 Gal.

I never used a protein skimmer. Just a normal heater. Normal Instant Ocean salt. Bobbing style Hydrometer. My stock was tiny. 3 Yellow Tail Blue Damsels. and some Turbo Grazers (recommended) So basically I just got tired of SW but I am going back after college!

I am Glad you chose SW but you need to remember patience is a virtue and to listen to people's advice.

I am in now way bashing you or your tank I am just sharing my blah blah!

Peace out man! Happy Keeping!
