convict x severum?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh but the sev x cons do have a tendency to have a larger black bar close to the tail, like severums do.
But for the most part, when you cross a fish that is always striped with a fish that has the ability to become striped, you end up with fish that always has vertical black bars

Lol and then you even give information about them. Its like me knowing everything about Unicorns because I have a horse.

Chris don't just hate because you don't believe me. The whole reason I posted that way back was to make the point that you dismissing and hating with no information is just as dumb as me saying that it is possible with no way to prove it.

all I can say is that Ive had that fish for a long time and that I got it from a guy who had a con and a sev pair up in his tank, at least thats where he said the babies come from. I have no idea what they would be if thats not what they are, and they do look like convicts, but the sillouette of that fish is pretty much the same shape as a severum imo.

I grew out a few of them, and that was my qualitative observation of the FACT of the hybrids that I had.
Regardless of whether or not you believe the guy, I was just trying to help by giving my experience with the fish that I had. Overall i'd say it wasn't really a positive review so Its not like i'm saying "do it man it will totally work" or anything.

Don't hate just because you don't believe. It reeks of hubris and makes me think that one day you'll have a severum and a bp have babies in your tank
but of course you won't tell anyone because it conflicts with your worldview lol :p

so to summarize:
you can't prove me wrong so be nice.

So because I can't prove you wrong that must mean you are right?

Even if he did breed the fish, isn't it likely he though he had a Severum but in fact had something else. Stores love to mislabel fish and ignorant hobbyist believe them. Your whole proof is someone elses word. I am not hating because I don't believe, I am hating because you make wild claims and then use you fish as proof of it. Hell, half of the time you don't even know what you are talking about.

Convicts and Severums are some of the more common type available to hobbyist. If it were possible for them to hybridize there would be many many cases of this happening because they are so common. Instead they are no true cases of this happening and the cases you do find either:
1. never had any fry
2. fish was mislabeled
3. they offer no pictures or any type of proof it happened.

The fact is that South American cichlids have evolved to the point where they are too genetically different to interbreed with one another. The only South American species that has been proven to interbreed with Central American species is ex-Cichlasoma Festae. No other South American species has been proven to. Central American species are all pretty close region wise so it make sense they can all interbred. But South American species get split off and change greatly from one another.

Too be honest, I absolutely despise the Heros species and will never keep one in my tanks because of the whole myths surrounding them.

This has nothing to do with hubris, only logic and reasoning....

And I am not trying to convince you of anything at this point, just want to people reading this realize you have no clue what you are talking about and that its a waste of time to try to create this cross if that is what they intend on doing.

Anything is possible in magic world of Fishland, where science holds no barings, and rumors run rampant like a drunk naked Swedish man at a Mexican soccer game. :screwy:
A "pair" and viable offspring are COMPLETELY different situations. No matter how much you want to have a severum hybrid "to be the only one in the world who has ever had one" its not going to happen. The proof is in the pudding, Find legit proof of a sev hybrid, or any SA CA hybrid, which means its impossible which means it does not happen. This is reality, not "Fishland" theories.
"Weird" stuff rarely happens in this world, It only means you dont understand/comprehend what happened.

I still love the way he put this.......

but faesta isnt even sa. its ca but its been introduced into sa
bump for an ol' yeller thread

Not true. Festaes(along with ornatum and a couple others I don't remember) are just more closely related to the CA cichlids. They have no native range in central america. When people say festaes are a CA fish living in SA, they don't mean they were introduced into SA from CA.

im on the fence on this leaning away from it being possible, I won't really believe it until I see an actual hybrid breeding with pictures of everything, kaleidoscope, why don't you attempt this? Or everybody, so we can put this to rest
