females will usually have an orange stomach and males will have trailing fins ime

You cannot go only by dark bodies or trailing fins. i have seen females very dark with only like a scale or two of orange so you have to watch out. also some females will get nice long pointy fins and when young can be mistaken for a guy. If the fish has a lot of orange then it is for sure a female. Males get bigger and bulkier. Also if you look closely on the back of a male's dorsal, anal and the base of the caudal(tail fin) you can see like small spots whereas the females dont have that.

haha i bought a male and female last month and they were pretty close to the same size, female being 2.5" and the male was roughly 3-3.5". right now the males pretty close to 5.5-6" and the females barely grown at all. sometimes cons make it extremely obvious what sex they are.

When you go to buy them you can easily pick out the males from the females. I will pick the ripest orange for the female and get the biggest male from another store to make sure they dont inbreed.

^ this is true, like said before more often than not you'll easily be able to tell males from females. that is unless you already have the fish, in that case post some pics and we'll help you out to the best of our abilities. oh and welcome to mfk!

females are usually smaller, have orange on the sides of there bodys, males also develop a bump on there head as they get older and are usally bigger than the females

female will lose red after eggs are laid but then thats a dead give away. female have trailing fins to but usually not as long. males head have less of a slope and some times devolp a hump on their face. males will eventually out grow females. the pair I have now the male is twice the size of the female and were same size when purchased. with in month male was noticeable larger. anybody need .75" convicts come and get them
