When I started keeping tropical fish about 5 years back, there was one time when I owned a tropical fish tank, it was about 20 gallons, nothing too special, just a few expensive angel fish and some swordtails and neon tetras, and this and that! But back then, I didn't make as much as nowadays, so they seem awfully pricey! Anyways, the whole story is, I live on the third floor in my house, there's no washroom up here, I would have to walk buckets of water up and down to change water, yes, I know it's hell, but it's well worth it! Anyways, so I got tired one day after work, but after syphoning all the gravel and water out, she insisted she would walk the water back up so I won't get stressed out. So i showed her how much conditioner to put in each bucket and i went to my bed a lied down, after about 20 minutes she called me over, she said "all this fish are floating on your fish tank, do they always swim this way?" I wuz... so i ran over, and when i got near the tank, i could see steam coming up! i put my finger in the water, it was near boiling! And i asked her, why did you use burning hot water? not even we can swim in this, she replied "oh, cuz they're hot tropical fish"! (She didn't speak fluent english, only a bit, and in chinese, direct english translation would be "HOT tropical fish") So there we go... she thought fish swims in BURNING HOT WATER!
And that is why I'm gonna say, don't let your girlfriend get near your tank before educating her!!!
At the end.. i almost fainted after hearing that, that was next to the dumbest thing i've heard in my life! and I think this deserves it's own thread!
And this is to NO offense to any female fish keeper on this site, i was just unfortunate to have the dumbest girlfriend!

Reminds me of something I read long time ago somewhere that a pet store employee or an owner sold a lady a hamster and told her it can be kept in a tank. The lady brought back a tank full of water the very next day and the lady complained that the hamster did nothing all day long but hang onto the heater. I dont know if it was a true story but I never forgot that one.
Long time ago my girlfriend did the same thing to her moms tank. My girlfriend told her mom that she could do it since she saw me do it many times. I showed up at the house to see my girlfriends mom in a craze. My girlfriend then started yelling at me. She said that she did everything that I did and now the fish are dea, and it's my fault. I put my hand in the water and it was hot tub hot. Poor fish

BTW My man didn't even know what a CICHLID was, or anything beyond goldfish, tetras, angels and 'algae eaters'. ^^; Guys can be 'ditsy' too
