Cool Mystery Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just for the record: I visited this shop last week and had a chat with the owner -- in so many words he admitted that the fish was an illegal export, not captive bred. Like most I couldn't condone this so wouldn't buy the fish even if interested in the species.
True, all Barcas are wild caught, as there has been no captive breeding done yet.

But in India fish aren't protected by the law, as long as the locale is not a protected area, such as a forest.

Typically In Asia any species are safe until some "English: researcher put them on the ban list or endanger species list then it's more likely WILL BECOME EXTINCT IN THE WILD cause all the smuggling/black market sell for massive profit LOL sad but it's true! The bright side some will try invest into captive breed so it will more likely become alot more common fish to buy (EX: Arowana most them are extinct from wild life but they are wide breed into many color morph species in farm :))

can juveniles be differentiated in male or female?
Well, define "juveniles", from 1 inch up to 6~8 inches still consider juveniles :) anything smaller than 6 inches is guessing game for the most part.
Anyway, general around 6+ inches the male will have broader fins, color much more developed than a female.
The best practice is buy a group of 5+ from 3~4 inches and grow them up, they will start form a pair around 8 inches, you will see the pair pretty much own half of the tank for themselves, remove other fishes before the pair kill them all.

How are you identifying it as a male or female at such a small size???

THE HEAD SHAPE IS SOMEWHAT CONICAL AND SLENDER....AS PER MY READ ARTICLES AND ALL

That's a very young fish, and a bit obese too, I would reduce its diet.

The head shape changes as it grows, by the time it reaches 15-17".

And the shape of head is to be looked at from top, and the difference is very subtle, so it's very apparent when you see two fish side by side.
