Cost of maintaining a 1000 gallon reef aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I recently bought a 1000 gallon aquarium, dimensions 130 x 60 x 30….so a pretty big one.

Cost me under $10k for a good amount of customization and I paid for the tank in 2 installments. At the moment I'd say the running costs of the tank are under $100 per month, it's been pretty straightforward.I will be buying a slightly smaller tank from the same guys (FishTankBank) and expect that to be roughly the same as the costs don't scale that much in my experience.

I may well get acrylic this time but that would be more expensive to build and probably more of a hassle to maintain

AquariumGuys just did a podcast with a 2000g tank owner. Worth a listen, he was recommending way way smaller tanks if he had to do it over.

Thought you might like to see a picture of the aquarium from the above post. It is 24' X 3' X 2' fish only/artificial reef. I have an entire 6' X 12' room at the end of the aquarium that is dedicated to all the mechanical equipment, quarantine tanks, 8 reactors, protein skimmers. biopellet reactor, sumps, supply storage, refrigerator for foods etc. The water changes are 250 gallons every two weeks and are mixed in a 250 gallon vertical tank for 3 days prior to the change in this room. Everything is plumbed for easy water changes.

Will you be my dentist!!!!

$10k for 1000g’s sounds like a good deal!

That’s glass? Gotta weigh over 1000lbs... I can’t imagine how it would be moved....
