although i would have to say to do everything you can to have no line of sight, put in alot of decor and possibly some larger dithers.

I agree with a lot of dithers in the tank like silver dollars and alot of convicts and maybe a few more large cichlids wouldnt hurt spread the aggression to other fish but give them alot of hiding places. And if the cons breed you got free clean feeders

i agree with the other guy. replace dovii and umbee with festae. better chance of a coab and prettier fish as well.

i have an 8x8 with 5 oscars, 2 jags, 3 jd's, 2 pacu, 3 tinfoil barbs, 4 xl pleco's, 1 4 line pim, 1 24" channel cat, 1 florida gar, 1 black shark, AND 1 8" GOLDFISH.

im here to tell ya that you can do it, that is why i said to try something most people wouldnt, cause you have the footprint most people dont. go for it, if it doesnt work you'll have one big monster running a big *** tank.

im sorry to say but your oscars, jags and jd's are a long way off sticking the 2 largest, most aggressive and predatory cichlids in a tank which is essentially a small foot print for 2 open water preds and then adding in one fish with more balls than brains and a jag who will get owned.
an 8x3 is whole different ball game when one of those fish needs just shy of that as a minimum by itself.
dont get me wrong im normally one of the people who says that things shouldnt be shot down straight away but i think an 8x3 in this case is madness although they all have their own personalities so it could work.

Id try it like u said it depends on the fish the, younger u get them the better i reckon, anything has a chance of working (personly id let the dovi be the smallest when they go in), next year im going to get a custom made 12foot tank with a dovi, jag, devil and my already owned gt,jd,fesat and oscar.
I suspect it won't be boring to watch. :nilly:

You could try it in a 480 gal it should not be any problems start them all off as juvi's at first.goodluck post pic's of those guy's.

Man , Umbie's and Dovii are in a world of their own when it comes to aggresion. Black Nasty's are bad enough but I think they would be a better fit.

this is why i said 3 posts before that to only get the umbee, and throw some oscars in with it. also get some more dithers. i put a nix on the umbee and dovii idea myself. my full recommendation was basically an 8x3 tank based around the umbee. anything with the umbee should be expendable. therefore not a dovii.

It's an 8x4, not 8x3. The consideration of that extra foot could make a world of difference. I think it's worth a shot. Do you have a lfs that could take one of the two if something went wrong? If so, double yes. Raise them together from juvie, and either give the tank lots of decor and separation, or none at all (this you may have to test and see which works better for you). Also add some other fish as dithers. The whole "open water predator, open water predator" thing is thrown out the window when you put them in an aquarium. There is no more open water. It's them, four glass walls, and some water. It will depend on the particular fish and how they choose to react. It could be perfect, or it could be less than.

Thanks again for all the imput guys! I work at a lfs so i could find a home for them super quick if needed. Im still in the planning process so when this acualy happens I will start them all out as babies, and then if it doesnt work i will jsut find a home for them and narrow it down, mostly i really want the dovii so if he doesnt want frrinds i will just put them in other tanks. When this gets goin i will post lots of pics. thanks.
