I know I am not an englih speaker, admittedly. But I referred to the "penitentiary system" ( and that starts in the police stations ), not to a penitentiary.:)
That's cool... just didn't want someone thinking he's in a giant prison in Rio de Janeiro like Carandiru when hes in a holding cell in a small prison.

Corrupt government or not, they're not going to throw some old scientist and a young white lady into a prison full of real criminals for trying to smuggle some dead fish...

I sure hope not... this whole story is truly sad...

Barring him actually having documentation to allow the export of the specimins - he knows better. Being a big wig doesn't give you an excuse to break the laws, if anything you're more obligated to set an example for your colleagues. As if the government doesn't have enough to deal with to begin with - if people like him chose to obey the rules the government wouldn't need to be making examples.

Maybe a few days/weeks in a jail will help set him straight.

The article on Practical Fishkeeping states: IBAMA said that the arrest came after a year-long investigation by IBAMA and the Federal Police who suspected that Bleher was exporting material in this manner.

Maybe he was just being more cautious subsequent visits...

Latest news so far from PFK .....

Breaking: Heiko Bleher released

Heiko Bleher, the ichthyological explorer who was arrested in Brazil with photographer Natasha Khardina for alleged fish smuggling, has been released from prison, Practical Fishkeeping can exclusively reveal.

Bleher contacted Practical Fishkeeping this afternoon to confirm that the pair had been released from prison after three and a half days behind bars.

According to IBAMA, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, Bleher attempted to board a flight with a co-passenger while carrying preserved fish tissues in alcohol and formalin without authorisation.

(See Heiko Bleher arrested in Manaus for alleged fish smuggling, News, 2 September, 2008.)

IBAMA said that the arrest came after a year-long investigation by IBAMA and the Federal Police who suspected that Bleher was exporting material in this manner.

Bleher confirmed that he was travelling to Milan from Manaus with Khardina, not Miami as stated in some Brazilian newspaper reports.

We hope to bring more details shortly.

and comments from Heiko himself:

I'm happy to hear that they have been released, it is terrible to think of them being locked up.

I am somewhat skeptical of the claim that it is perfectly legal to transport dead fish out of Brasil. I thought there was an international ban on trade in wild animal parts being enforced in most countries these days...
