Countdown to the end of your fishkeeping days?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As for the prices, i’ve been around a few LFS when i visited and prices were astronomical...

When I went to Aus I thought all the fish and plants were really cheap. Not as cheap as the US where they're ridiculously cheap but much less than they are here.

Except plecs, they were way more than here...I don't know why. They have much looser quarantine and import regs I think.

Be glad you have fish that can easily be rehomed. I have two long lived monster fish. They are special needs fish requiring special needs housing, i.e., big tank...a really big tank. Unloading them would be practically a death sentence for them. We cannot move. As long as they are alive, (and they could outlive me) we will be stuck here.

In some ways, I am almost envious of people who keep smaller fish with shorter life spans. Almost, but not quite. I have no need to relocate for education, work, career. Been there, done that. Actually, there is no place I would rather live than right where I am. So it's all good for me. I do feel very sorry for pacu whose owners cannot make a 30+ year commitment to keeping them--people who still have schools and careers ahead of them.

It really depends what you like and what you are after...

In Aus weird oddballs either cost a huge amount or arent available due to shipping costs, quarantine laws and wildlife laws (coz they need to protect their native fauna and flora) which is understandable...

But as a keeper whos for almost 2 decades been able to get anything and everything with relative ease and very fair prices it becomes a huge shock to the system that they arent readily available and when they are, they come at extreme premium prices to compared to what im used to :p

I honestly didnt think i would leave this place either, but as i mentioned before, politics, the envrionment and a whole host of other things have made me decide enough is enough and its time to move on while i still can...

Seemed to be a lot more oddballs available for cheaper there. Not surprising though given the much huger market and only a 7 day quarantine vs 28 days like here. Don't know how the allowed list compare but very few allowed ones are actually imported due to the financial risk. :(

Many yrs ago when i was in the navy I had 15 fish in tanks ranging in size from 55 to 200 gallons. I moved cross country with all of them twice. Didn't lose a single fish. ...lot of water changes. The point is tho that moving doesn't mean you have to give up the hobby. Australians love fish too! They have a thriving industry for keepers.

If you know about the relationship between China and Hong Kong then its actually not that far off...

The laws here regarding brinnging fish in is pretty lax as far as i know... so not hard to get stuff in if the stores willing to order for you...
