Cownose rays just arrived!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tank and stock are awesome! Did you ever talk more about the problems you had with the tank originally? Did it arrive with a bunch of leaks? Did tenecor help fix them? And finally how much did they charge for that monster?

Also, you talked about an even bigger tank in the works? How big are you planning for your sharks and rays?

I don't want to say it's gonna be HUGE, but it's twice the size of my big cownose project.

:naughty:

~40K gallons - 48'x20'x6', concrete bowl with acrylic top half. Enclosed entirely in my garage. Running heating/cooling lines under the bowl. Still working on how to get the water out of the tank - either just dedicated out pumps, or post-style overflows in the center (I'm leaning this way, so they can also support a top of sorts, and also allow some rockwork columns). Filtration will be public aquarium grade RK2 system, etc. Plan is to start in March/April - the pad is already leveled.

Rays are doing well - they REALLY loved the fresh scallops today. I got this big blue starfish last week - it's a rampaging beast. Taken out 6 urchins now, and devours the clams I put in there for the rays. It's rather impressive.

The big problems I had with Tenecor was the customer service - the tank was 6 weeks late, and I kept getting the run around about when it would be delivered. When it arrived, there was a single leak between the main tank and the overflow, so that water constantly drains to the sump (this is a big ass problem when the power goes out, and the pumps stop cycling the water back into the tank - typically they'd just reach equilibrium, then stop). I fixed it myself. Additionally, rather than supply real cable ties (hose clamps), Tenecor only sends zip ties, which quite frankly suck. For the cost of the tank (~$10K), you'd think they'd spend the extra $15.

I like that you have a plan that is realistic. We had a high goal, and are a bit behind already. You're gonna love the RK2 unit! Georgia Aq runs like 26 of them on the big tank.

Amazing! I saw a bunch of cownose's at the Florida Aquarium and in person they're gorgeous to see gliding around. I can't wait for updates :)

40,000 gallon tank will be neat, all your friends and neighbors will be over so you can recoop some of your money by charging addmission. Have you ever thought about a windmill to power your hobby? lol. Thats a lot of yards of cement, will it be poured or sprayed like they do swimming pools?

I have thought about going green on power, but I like in a canyon, where there are huge trees, which prevent use of wind or solar power. Plans are to heat the water using roof mounted solar water heaters though (get enough sun for that).

Water changes right now are ~10% once every 4-5 weeks. I just keep an eye on water specs every other day. It takes a lot to sully that much water. I'll take pics of the water change next weekend.
