Hello, I have a question since there is not a whole lot of info on Cownose Stingrays...

What would you think a good tank size would be for a trio of these rays? Would a 14 foot diamter, 3 foot deep aquarium be enough swimming room? This would be about 3500 gallons, which is the biggest I can go.

Thanks in advanced.

maybe two. i would make it like 36 tall maybe taller

You'll want several - much like sharpnose sharks, rays do better in groups. My two are quite ill right now, and someone at the MBA suggested it's likely due to stress from being so isolated. I was supposed to get 3+, but one died in shipping, and has not yet been replaced.

I think you'd be ok with a 14' diameter for 3-4 rays.

Sorry to hear about your rays, hope they recover and maybe you can get a couple more real soon.

Thanks Jaba, I was hoping you could help me. Seeing your threads about these rays is what actually inspired me to go this route.

Will you be getting more rays to replace your lost one? And if so would you mind telling me your source from where you got them?

Hopefully yours get better soon.

Actually - Cownose Rays are similar to Sharpnose Sharks in alot of basic ways.

Such as 1.) they are similar in size(3-5ft), 2.) do best when kept in schools, 3.) they are both active swimmers. 4.) they share basically they same habitats. 5.) have similar water temp requirements (warm temperate to tropical).

And they also tend to require similar sizes of ponds/lagoons, in order to keep for life.

Personally - I never seen Cownose Rays kept at a public aquarium where there wasn't at least 4-5 individuals in the tank. And even then it was in a tank/pond of at least 10,000 gallons.

I don't plan on adding the remainder until my BIG ~40K gallon tank is done next year - lesson learned. Unfortunately, there is sparse info about keeping cownose in private aquaria readily available. They are absolutely amazing creatures.

Sounds like you're on the right track. 14' would be a good pool for them (as posted). The next step will be planning out the filter set up for them.
