The next step will be planning out the filter set up for them.

Because they really do make a HUGE mess. Far messier eaters than any of my sharks or the guitarfish (who is also very cool, if you're looking for a ray that does swim, and has a unique appearance - he also spends time hiding VERY well).

Oh yeah, I know I will need a ton of filtration. Any recomendations on a protien skimmer for a tank this size? Also, how much of a turn over rate would be good for Cownose Rays?, I was thinking that 6-7 time per hour would be good, along with multiple Reverse Carlson Surge Devices.

Thanks for all the help fellas!:)

Emperor Aquatics makes some good sized counter current skimmers for the 500-2000 gallon range.

Thanks, I just checked out their site and it seems that they have some pretty good products.

Anythoughts on turnover rates for these rays?

3-4 times ought to be sufficient, honestly. Personally, if I had to do it over again, I'd go RK2 (I've acquired a huge used RK2 for the big tank).

Thanks Jaba!, I was actually looking at the RK2 skimmers at aquaticeco.com, and I think that will be the route for me.

The St. Louis zoo has a 16,000 gallon petting pond with 28 cownose and 5 or 6 southern rays and they have a 2x hour water turnover, doesnt seem like enough but all the rays were healthy when we went down there this summer. Buy the way they get shipped to Florida for the winter and come back in the spring. " Time share"

We'll be running our new touch pool at a 4-5 times/hr turn over. It's gonna me moving through that thing. We're using a set of 4 sandfilters, a big RK2 skimmer, UV and ozone to help keep the water up to par.

Ok thanks guys, I was thinking I was going to have to have a ton of flow in there.

In all the Shark and Ray books that I have, none of them mention wether tangs and surgeon fish are compatible with rays and sharks. Do you all know if they are compatible together? Also, are parrot fish compatible with rays?, my guess would be no, but I figured I'd ask here.
