the coyotes that evolved in california coexisted with the dire wolf and saber toothed tigers, colombian mammoths, mastadons, ground sloths and short faced bear(cave bear) there were also extinct cammals, elk, ancient bison, pronghorn, pecary or boar, mule deer, blacktailed deer, and extinct deer these are known from fossils found in the le brea tar pits and when diamond valley lake was dug california is known as the dire wolf fossil capitol of the us and unlike the coyotes that mixed with wolves thousands of years ago coyotes here probably ocaissonaly mated with dire wolves wich were like wolves on steroids they along with almost all of the animals except for bears, pronghorn, deer, tule elk, javelina, fox, jack rabbit, mountain goat and coyotes went extinct inbetween 10,000 and 6,000 years ago mountain coyotes here could be the largest pure coyotes with no wolf ancestory unless they have some dire wolf ancestory in the us also the only known fatal attack by coyotes on a human was in a rural part of california no grey wolves ever existed in california becuase of the huge population of dire wolves but also things like huge amounts of snowfall and large domestic dogs and boar and deer abundant mountain coyotes may get bigger since unlike thousands of years ago they have no competitors except for humans
