I was just curious as to everyone's opinion for selling items on Craigslist to people who don't know what they really need.

For example, I am selling a 30 gallon hex tank on craigslist (only 18" wide x 25" tall). I had a guy call me about it and was very interested. When he came over to look at it, I asked what would be put in there. He said his pair of oscars has outgrown the 10 gallon tank they were in and he needed something bigger.

Now comes the ethics question: Do you sell him the 30 gallon to get rid of it and hope he picks up onthe fact that it will also be too small in the near future, or do you deny him the sale and redirect him to buying something larger for the long term?

you can inform him that the tank will not do for long and if still chooses to buy it then you have a sale...

Tough call. I'd sell it to him only after explaining that he would need a bigger tank very soon. If he decides its not what he needs, someone else will come along, but if he still wants it, at least you told him. IMO

Well either the guy doesn't know or doesn't care. I would still try to sell to him but let him know that they will outgrow the 30 in 6-8 months but he can use the 30 after they out grow it for feeder fish!;)

Thanks for your input guys. I did tell him it would be too small, but he refused to believe me. His reasoning for thinking they wouldn't get that big was: "This tank will fit on my desk, and they will only grow to the size of the tank they're in."

My response was, "If they already outgrew one tank, why wouldn't they outgrow a 2nd?"

He still bought the tank. Oh well, I tried. Hopefully I'll have another tank for sale when he's looking again in a few months. lol

I did give him a link to this web-site so he could do some "independent research."
